11 civilians killed in Syrian airstrikes

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) IDLIB, Syria: A Syrian fighter jet killed 11 civilians in the northwestern Syrian city of Idlib late Monday.

A local defense official, Leys Faris, told Anadolu Agency that the Syrian army jet bombed a residential region south of the downtown area controlled by the opposition.

Eleven civilians were killed, including women and children, and others were also injured, Faris said.

On Sunday, 53 civilians were killed in airstrikes by regime forces in Maarrat al-Nu'man and Kafr Nabl near Idlib.

Syria has been locked in a devastating civil war since early 2011, when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests -- which erupted as part of the "Arab Spring" uprisings -- with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and millions more displaced by the conflict.
