- Word on the street: Social media security

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily)

Public opinion on the streets of Muscat.

Are you concerned about WhatsApp sharing your information with its parent company Facebook? Does it really matter?

Aarti Ramaiya, Homemaker
I will definitely be worried if my personal information is shared on a social networking site. It is a scary proposition to think that someone is storing information about you somewhere.

Nishant Raj, Sales executive
No one in the world has the right to share anyone's personal details or information. It is an absolute breach of privacy.

Kailash Shah, General manager
Yes, the news is disconcerting. It is a serious issue that should be discussed as privacy can't be compromised.

Neelofar Zafar, Private sector employee
WhatsApp is a very important medium of communication today and a lot of sensitive and confidential information too is shared through it. Giving Facebook access to this information is unacceptable.

Ahmed Khan Niazi, Engineer
This is definitely disturbing as there are many applications today that seek access to your Facebook account. This means information can be leaked which is scary.

Suchitra Dinesh, Homemaker
I will never want any of my private discussions or photographs to be shared on Facebook as it is a public sphere. You never know, confidential and sensitive information can be misused by people to mar your reputation.

Do you think you can do without either of the two - WhatsApp or Facebook?

Mubarak al Hamdani, Social researcher
WhatsApp is the most important tool of communication in society today and I am sure it will be difficult to survive without it. But, Facebook is not as important and can be avoided.

Mohammad al Sinani, Translator
Social media networking is an important part of society today. The most popular ones are Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. My favourite is WhatsApp as it offers lots of features. I cannot survive without it.

Mohammad al Qasmi, Doctor
Social media networks are massively addictive. It is very difficult to get them out of one's system.

Ahmed al Muzaini, Teacher
It is difficult to live without either of them as they are not just means of communication but also source of news today. I have seen many people so addicted that they are constantly glued to one or other social media apps.

Ahmed al Shamaki, Job seeker
I cannot do without social media applications. Facebook and WhatsApp are the easiest ways to track news and stay in the loop today. They are an absolute necessity. The only time I avoided using them, was when I was a student.

Tariq al Sadi, Job seeker
Without Facebook and WhatsApp I will feel isolated. Social media applications help you stay connected. Without these, you feel cut off from the rest of the world. I will have to depend on traditional media for information.

Are you concerned about your identity and personal data reaching wrong hands because of apps?

Rekha Khan, Homemaker
No. I read the terms and conditions of every application properly before downloading it and always make it a point to select or deselect conditions that are irrelevant or pose a risk. I also don't entertain useless and random advertisements.

Laxmikanth, Graphic designer
I am concerned and so take ample precaution while downloading applications. I always use antivirus for scanning any mobile application before I download or update.

Mohammad Kaleem, IT expert
I am not concerned, because neither do I store any personal details on my mobile nor share any vital information with anyone over the Web. I use mails to communicate any confidential matter. I also recommend people not to opt for untrustworthy free Wi-Fi. One must be careful and read the terms properly before downloading and using any application.

Mohammad Khalid, Businessman
I have heard of stories about phones being hacked. Fortunately, I haven't ever experienced anything of that sort. Moreover, I am quite cautious when it comes to sharing personal data over the Internet or through smartphones. I always ask people to avoid downloading random things from the Internet as they could be dangerous.

Amal al Lawati, Private sector employee
Yes, it is always a concern because my mobile phone is filled with personal information, photographs and numbers. I have heard that there is a software that hackers use to snoop in.

Noor Alam, Private sector employee
It is a matter of concern, but I hardly keep any personal or confidential data in my smartphone. I also make sure that I regularly update my applications and avoid using public Wi-Fi.
