UN envoy urges supporting Libyan institutions

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGERIA, Sept 4 (KUNA) -- Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya Martin Kobler called on the international community to make more concerted efforts to support the institutions of Libya without intervention in the country's domestic affairs.

The signing of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Libya nearly eight months ago constitutes "a new major political achievement that enabled overcome the difficult situation Libya experienced," he said at a joint press conference with Algerian Minister for Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and the Arab League Abdelkader Messahel on Sunday.

The fight against terrorism and illegal immigration are among "the major challenges facing the Libyan government, Algeria Press Service (APS) quoted him as saying.

"The first challenge the international community and the Libyan government must meet is counterterrorism," said Kobler, also head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMI).

He welcomed the recent advances made by the Libyan army against the so-called Islamic State (IS) in many areas.

On Immigration he said: "All parties must also fight against illegal immigration," stressing that nearly 100,000 illegal immigrants from several African countries arrived in Italy via Libya.

Kobler hailed as "active, constructive and very strong" Algeria's role for the settlement of the Libyan crisis through negotiations.

"These efforts reflect Algeria's commitment to the stability of a vital region for it and its protection against the international terrorist threat and organized crime," he stressed.

The UN official also highlighted "the need to take advantage of Algeria's experience in national reconciliation between Libyans so that they look forward to a brighter future," adding that "all Libyans must be aware of the future challenges, not just the elite." (end) ft.gb
