UAE participates in Baku Chess Olympiad

DUBAI, 2nd September, 2016 (WAM) --- The UAE national chess team is in Baku, Azerbaijan to participate in the 42nd Chess Olympiad, being organised by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) from 1st to 14th September 2016.

The nine-strong UAE team - five men and four women- seeks to achieve good results in the a biennial chess tournament, which boasts this year a total of 181 teams from 177 countries in the open section and 142 from 137 countries in the women's section.

The UAE delegation to the biennial chess tournament also includes coaches and officials from the UAE Chess Federation and two Emirati international arbiters.

The UAE men's team prepared for the international event during the recent 23rd Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival.

FIDE, as its known from the French acronym from Federation Internationale des Echecs, was founded in Paris, France, on 20th July, 1924, at the closing ceremony of its first unofficial Olympiad, and was recognised by the International Olympic Committee as an international sports federation in 1999. The first official Chess Olympiad took place in1927 in London, UK.
