(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TUNIS, Sept 2 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul-Gheit held talks Friday with Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi and Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui on the situations in the Arab region, and the Arab League role in solving crises.
Abul-Gheit and Essebsi discussed reforms of the Arab League and Tunisia's upcoming presidency of the Arab League Ministerial Council, the presidency said in a statement.
Abul-Gheit said his visit aimed at showing support for Tunisia and its role to maintain security and stability in the region, the Arab League chief said in a statement following the meeting.
Later at a joint news conference with Jhinaoui, Abul-Gheit said the "influence of the Arab League in solving problems of the Arab world has weakened due to situations in the region." He said there were 15 million Syrian people, either internally displaced or refugees, as well as a conflict in Libya which threatened the neighboring countries. "This requires the Arab League intervention to solve them," he said.
Abul-Gheit arrived in Tunis late last night on a two-day state visit. (end) ksj.bs
