Qatar- Committee names more than 6,680 streets this year


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) DOHA: The Streets and Areas Naming Committee at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has named more than 6,683 streets in different areas in the country since the beginning of this year.

It has also named 53 streets and public spaces in Msherib area in Doha and 37 streets in The Pearl area.

The Committee was established according to Cabinet decision No 17 for the year 2003.

The committee comprises three members representing the Ministry, in addition to others representing the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Ministry of Culture and Sports, The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal, Central Municipal Council (CMC), and private sector which is represented by two members. Every entity has the right to chose their representative.

The committee is responsible for revising the current names of streets and areas and suggesting alternative names, as well as proposing names for new areas and streets not yet named. It also gives its opinion about names suggested by official authorities.

The committee has set up standards and regulations for naming streets, intersections and roundabouts, among them giving priority to existing geographical names to as reminders to generations to come. It also takes into account the old names known among people and names of figures which have an important role in Qatar, in addition to the Prophet";s (PBUH) companions.

Among other standards being followed is that the way of writing the names must be based on the way they are pronounced in Qatar, to preserve local pronunciation. The committee does not approve any name unless it has origins in Qatar and is included in the Ministry database.

The committee also chooses the names based on the elderly";s information about the history of the names.
