DOHA: In preparation for the new academic year, which begins in the third week of next month, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education has announced re-opening of admission of students at all Independent schools.

The ministry has provided enough seats at the elementary and kindergarten levels, with 29 new buildings only for KGs. About 95 percent of these schools have vacancies. Independent schools will re-open admission next Monday, to give an opportunity for students who have not registered in the first chance, for various reasons such as illness, Al Sharq reports. Registration can be completed online or by visiting the school concerned.

A number of private and international schools will also start their new academic year after the Eid Al Adha holidays, along with the Independent schools.

Fifteen new private schools and KGs are expected to open during the new academic year, which together will create 10,380 additional seats at different levels including elementary, preparatory and secondary. The Private Schools Office at the Ministry had received more than 68 applications for opening new schools for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Education will become costlier for many private school students, with 55 schools being granted permission to raise their fees in the new academic year. Most of these schools have already announced their revised fee structure. The Private Schools office, however, has clarified that no school is permitted to increase the fees by more than 7 percent.

Registration at the Independent schools will remain open until January next year for new students from private schools or from abroad.

Students seeking transfer from one school to another can complete the procedures from September 1 to October 15. Students seeking transfer from private schools to Independent schools have been given time until October 15.

Parents of such children must apply for an 'exceptional admission” for their children and should fulfil all the related terms and conditions. Students dismissed from Independent schools have a chance to seek admission in the adult education programme of the ministry as per the terms and conditions.

Registration of new students at Independent schools from KG to Grade 12 started on May 8. Admission to Independent schools is open to Qataris, students from other GCC states and expatriate students, in exceptional cases.
