The mobile library 'Maktabati' is a Dar al Atta'a initiative sponsored by BP Oman, which encourages school students to read and develop their skills.

Maktabati operates from a bus that tours schools around the sultanate, providing books at a reasonable price and conducting reading and story-writing competitions.

It has been a year since the library's launch and over 19,000 students across different age groups have visited and have bought over 20,000 books.

'Maktabati' is one of the several educational initiatives being sponsored by BP Oman's social investment programme. Shamsa al Rawahi, social investment programme officer, said, 'We believe that reading has a role to play in the development of the nation. Supporting this initiative would increase the chance of reading becoming a part of a student's lifestyle and an important component of today's society.'

The library has toured 29 schools in 15 different wilayats across six governorates. Teachers and supervisors from the various schools have welcomed the concept and support how it raises the importance of reading. Ali al Daraai, a supervisor at Ras al Jabal Basic Education School, said, 'Maktabati has made reading an exciting activity for the students and motivated them to read and research more.'

Sharing his experience so far, Hatem bin Said al Maamari, Maktabati's librarian, said, 'There is a huge gap between books and the readers and the best way to tackle this is to introduce reading to schools.' Currently at the Salalah Municipal Entertainment Centre, the library will remain at this province until the end of the local tourism festival and then restart its tours.
