About 300 people turned up to witness the first-ever Muay Thai show organised at Muscat Grand Mall (MGM) over the weekend.

The two-day event displaying Thailand's popular combat sport, also known as Thai boxing, attracted people of different nationalities and age groups, with children as small as five years among the eager spectators.

Speaking about the event, H E Jesda Katavetin, Ambassador of Thailand to Oman said, 'For the past few years the Thai embassy organised several events to boost the relationship between Oman and Thailand.

'This is the first-ever Muay Thai event we've brought to the people of Oman.'

Muay Thai is referred to as 'The art of eight limbs' as a competitor relies on the combined use of his fists, elbows, knees and shins to strike the opponent.

H E Katavetin added, 'Muay Thai was an ancient martial art form used in battle fields and for self defence. Today it is a popular sport to promote good health – both physical and mental. It is an important part of Thai culture.'

He thanked Grand Master Wisanu Beranda, director of Thailand Foundation for his initiative in making the event possible.

An 11-member team of fighters from Bangkok have flown to a number of Gulf countries in an attempt to spread awareness on Muay Thai which can also be undertaken as a fitness regime.

The team members used the opportunity to train interested people in Muscat following their MGM performance, before leaving for Thailand on Sunday.

Before visiting Oman the team had performed in Qatar and Kuwait.
