The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) in partnership with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) inaugurated six sales service points [vending kiosks] in Jebel Akhdar on Wednesday.

The event was held under the patronage of Sheikh Khalifa bin Saleh al Busaidi, deputy wali of Nizwa.

The project is part of MoT's continued efforts to enhance tourism destinations while providing a viable source of income to SMEs and residents of Jebel Akhdar.

The project launched kiosks in selected areas of Jebel Akhdar to sell locally produced goods. Two portals will sell locally-grown fruits, two kiosks will provide tourists with authentic Omani food while one kiosk will sell locally made handicrafts and one will provide tourism services, such as guided tours.

It is sponsored by PDO and is part of its National Objectives programme that aims to inject funding to local communities and the private sector.

The project will give local residents an opportunity to promote and market their products in a way that adds value to tourists. This also provides residents a good opportunity to start their career in the tourism sector.

MoT's initiatives expert Salim al Abri said that the ministry and the project management team have facilitated the process and made it a simple procedure for the residents to be involved in.

He added that the main goal of the initiative is to provide tourists with an enhanced experience. The project also comes at right time as the pomegranate season will start in September, allowing both tourists and farmers to get the maximum value out of the season.
