UN: Youth unemployment rises this year, and so could migration

Geneva, Dhu-AlQa'dah 21, 1437, August 24, 2016, SPA -- Unemployment among young people is rising again, the International Labour Organization (ILO) said Wednesday, warning that migration from poor to rich countries could grow over the next decade, according to dpa.
After several years of improvement, the global jobless rate among 15 to 24-year-olds will rise to 13.1 per cent this year and next, up from 12.9 per cent in 2015, the UN labour body reported in Geneva.
This will increase the number of unemployed young people by 500,000 to 71 million, according to the ILO.
This is the result of recessions in emerging markets such as Brazil and Russia, which are suffering from lower commodity prices.
Emerging economies are therefore expected to see the sharpest rise in young jobless people, from 13.3 per cent last year to 13.7 per cent in 2017.
Poverty among the working youth has decreased for decades, but the pace has been slower than the decline among adults, leading to a growing share of underprivileged young people among the total global workforce.
The ILO found that a 1-per-cent rise in youth poverty in developing countries leads to a 0.5-per-cent rise in young people who are willing to emigrate to seek a better future.
While 20 per cent of young people around the world say they would go abroad, the share is 35 per cent in sub-Saharan Africa and 28 per cent in Arab countries.
