Meeting on Arab human rights begins in Tunisia

TUNIS, 24th August, 2016 (WAM) -- Human rights officials at Arab interior ministries today began their second conference in Tunis to discuss several issues relating to human rights and security.

Representatives of interior ministries of Arab countries, the League of Arab States, the Arab Human Rights Committee, the Naif Arab University for Security Sciences and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) are participating in the in the two-day meeting.

Items on the agenda of the meeting include monitoring the human rights of prisoners and detainees, combating terrorism, initiatives for promoting the culture of human rights at the security agencies of Arab countries, as well as a proposed code of conduct for Arab security personnel and public servants.

In the opening speech, Secretary-General of the Arab Interior Ministers Council, Mohammed bin Ali Koman, stressed that the council is interested in opening up to human rights organisations and civil society organisations.
