Qatar- Oapec for more reliance on green energy

DOHA: Abbas Al Naqi, Secretary-General of Organisation of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (Oapec), of which Qatar is a member, said yesterday that some Oapec member countries were aiming to use renewable energy along with conventional sources of energy at rates ranging between 4.3 percent and 40 percent.

Al Naqi told Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) that Oapec has prepared a special study on the reliance on renewable energy in the current energy mix in Oapec member countries, after taking into considering possibilities like exploitation of renewable energy and transfer of its own technology as a strategic choice aimed at diversifying the consumed energy mix, QNA reported.

He said that in recent years, exploitation of renewable energy sources and the transfer of its technologies to member states of the (Oapec) had emerged as an option aimed at diversifying the consumed energy mix and promoting it locally and marketing it regionally before marketing it globally. This, he said, would provide an alternative for petroleum locally and also lead to increased revenue as more crude oil and natural gas would be available for export.

He said in future Oapec member countries would focus on use of renewable energy as an alternative to meet the growing demand for electricity. He said the Oapec study was aimed at reviewing the current reality concerning energy consumption by member states, its main features and exploring the possibilities of diversifying the existing energy mix within the context of resources available in these countries.

Al Naqi said the Oapec study has addressed six themes including determining the status of member states within the context of global energy balance, focusing on energy consumption in these countries, the current mix of energy being consumed, future prospects of the energy mix, opportunities to diversify this energy mix and finally findings and recommendations.
