EU offers assistance to quake-stricken Italy

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Aug 24 (KUNA) -- The EU expressed solidarity with Italy which was struck by an earthquake Wednesday morning and said it was ready to provide help and assistance.
"Italy is part of our European family and as the European Union we stand in full solidarity with the Italian people and the national authorities at this time. The EU is ready to help," said EU Commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis management Christos Stylianides in a statement He noted that the European Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre is closely monitoring the situation and has already been in contact with the Italian civil protection authorities regarding any help which could be requested.
According to media reports, at least 21 people have been killed by the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Central Italy. (end) nk.gta
