Oman- Ministry arrests over 700 beggars in just two months

The special task teams of the Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) conducted 1,420 inspections and rounded up 383 beggars in July. Of these, 35 were aged below 12 and 55 over the age of 60.

Of the total arrested in July, 209 were males and 174 females, while 96 were Omanis (61 males and 35 females), and 287 were expatriates (148 males and the rest females). MoSD intensified its campaign to combat the begging menace during the months of June and July (Ramadan) essentially in the governorates of Muscat, Dhofar, North and South Batinah, Buraimi and North and South Sharqiyah.

The ministry conducted 1,222 inspections during June and rounded up 330 beggars. The concerning issue for the ministry, it stated, was that 35 of the arrested were under the age of 12. While 20 were between the age of 12 and 18 years, 151 were in the age group of 18-40 years. In addition, 122 were in the age group of 40-60 years, and 55 beggars were aged above 60.

The highest number of arrests were made in Muscat (255), followed by North and South Batinah (86), Buraimi (30) Sharqiyah (5), Dhofar (4), Dakhiliyah (2) and Dhahirah (1).
