Woman jailed for using others' ID to buy SIM cards

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A Jordanian woman has been sentenced to three months in jail, to be followed by deportation, after the Court of First Instance found her guilty of forgery and fraud charges.

The 33-year-old woman was on trial accused of using others' Emirates ID cards to obtain Etisalat SIM cards, make phone calls and use the telecommunication services in bills amounting to thousands of dirhams.

The case dates back to and prior to May 2013.

She used her neighbours' Emirates ID cards to fraudulently avail of Etisalat services in bills totaling Dh28,500.

Her neighbour, a 39-year-old Egyptian housewife, said that the accused borrowed her ID card, telling her she did not carry one and needed to receive some money transfer. But it was not long before she learnt that her card was used by the accused to apply for Etisalat phone numbers in her name, making her incur Dh21,000 in bills.

A second complainant from Sudan, 43, claimed the accused managed to convince her to lend her ID card for some charity work. "I learnt from Etisalat later that a bill worth Dh7,500 was due on SIM cards issued in my name."
