UAE- Don't switch off power at night, shops warned

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The inspection campaign will continue to find whether any of the shops are violating rules regarding keeping food items.

The Sharjah Municipality has initiated action against three groceries which switched off electricity in the shop at night.

The public health department of the municipality has intensified inspection campaign on food outlets and groceries selling food items which switch off electricity at night time, said a senior official.

Shaikha Shatha Al Muaala, Director of the department, said some of the shops switch off power at night to reduce the cost of electricity without considering that there are food items kept inside the shop, which would get spoiled in higher temperature. Officials from the department had inspected 665 shops, but found only three as violating regulations in this regard.

The inspection campaign will continue to find whether any of the shops are violating rules regarding keeping food items. Strict action would be taken against violators including grocery stores, she said.

"If any of the shops are found switching off power at night, causing the food items to be spoilt, they would be closed as a preventive measure. They will be allowed to continue sales only after submitting an undertaking that the violation would not be repeated," she said, adding that some of the shop owners are not aware of the impact of switching off the cooling systems. Many food items get spoiled and become harmful if consumed after storing in a higher temperature, she added.
