Russia FM: West didn't realize military operations' repercussions in MENA

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Aug 23 (KUNA) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday the West has not realized so far the repercussions of military operations in Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Chaos overwhelmed the region due to these operations that led to looting of weapons and ammunition depots, Lavrov added in a statement to Russia's news agency TASS.

He said a lot of weapons, including anti-aircraft missiles, have dropped out of sight, noting that up to 500 missile systems disappreared in Libya.

The first risks of the operations appeared in Mali when gunmen shot down a military aircraft by an anti-aircraft missile, he noted.

Lavrov stressed that nobody can know where these weapons are hidden and when they could be used.

He indicated that these risks would have been doubled if Russia had not acted, three years ago, to help the US avoid a military strike against Syria after persuading President Bashar Al-Assad to give up chemical weapons. (end) as.hm
