Expat held over illegal Dubai charity drive released on bail

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A British-Australian man detained in Dubai on charges of holding an "illegal" charity drive has been released on bail, an advocacy group said on Tuesday.

In a Facebook post, UK-based support group 'Detained in Dubai' said Scott Richards is "home, relieved and recovering with his family, and will later prepare legal defence."

Earlier in August, the Dubai Police confirmed to Khaleej Times that Richards was being held in the detention centre at Al Murraqabat Police Station.

According to his legal representative, Radha Stirling, Richards was detained on July 28. Stirling said Richards was working at Camp Qambar in Afghanistan for a US-registered charity, and distributed taurpulins to civilians there.

After returning to Dubai last month, she claimed he was detained by the police for allegedly promoting his charity via social media. Richards had been working as an economic development advisor in Dubai.
