Dubai airport policeman 'steals' Dh3,500 from wallet

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) An airport policeman stood trial in the Court of First Instance over a charge of stealing Dh3,500 from a wallet that a traveller forgot at the inspection point.

The 24-year-old Yemeni has denied the charge.

A police lieutenant said during the investigation that he was on duty at Terminal 1 of the Dubai International Airport on July 17. "I was on duty near the handbag scanner when I spotted two wallets left in a box. I asked the travellers, who were then around, if the wallets belonged to any of them, but no one came forward."

He said the wallets were kept away and were to be handed over to the Lost and Found section. "About an hour later, an Indian man approached us to claim back his wallets. I gave them to him after checking them and finding his driving licence," the officer added.

However, the man found that Dh3,500 was missing from one of the wallets. "He said he was in a hurry and would come back later to lodge an official complaint. I wrote down his details."

Footages from the CCTV cameras were then checked. "The defendant, who works as an inspector, was seen taking the money out of one wallet and putting it in his pocket."

When confronted by the lieutenant, the accused willingly admitted that he stole the amount.

"He admitted that he opened one of the wallets to check the owner's ID when he saw the amount. He took it and hid it in his pocket. He later found the Asian man asking the police officers about his wallets."
