Kuwait- ATT conference urges transparency in arms purchases

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA, Aug 22 (KUNA) -- The Second Conference of State Parties of the United Nations' (UN) landmark Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) on Monday yielded calls for more transparency as it relates to international arms agreements and purchases.

The conference highlighted the need for its 87 member nations, in addition to 46 others that have signed the treaty, to pinpoint concrete steps required to implement this first of its kind treaty, said a press statement by the conference.

Moreover, the statement chastised Britain, Germany, France and the United States for failing to adhere to the treaty through their arms sales to nations embroiled in conflict, to which the statement described as an infraction of international law.

"There are some member nations who continue to violate the ATT" Director of the Control Arms Secretariat Anna McDonald said, as she urged the international community to take action against the disastrous effects of arms sales.

She also pointed out that it is incumbent upon member nations to halt the sales of weapons that induce humanitarian suffering.

The ATT regulates international trade in conventional arms, from small weapons to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships, having been in effect since December of 2014. (end) nsa.nam
