UAE- Ras Al Khaimah police arrest Emirati for cybercrime

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Ras Al Khaimah Police have arrested an Emirati young man involved in cybercrime and embezzling money from the public using various websites.

The suspect proved to have misused the internet in embezzling luxurious cameras initially offered for sale by others at specialised websites, according to a senior police officer.

Major Ahmed Mubarak Al Shamsi, head of the criminal investigations section at the police operations general directorate, RAK police, on Saturday said they were alerted about a number of cybercrimes.

"We received a number of public complaints that the suspect has coned some people by collecting their expensive cameras which they offered for sale online without paying out due money."

Some of the cameras embezzled were valued at Dh15,000 each, he added. "The story started when the suspect read an online advertisement about an expensive camera offered for sale, following which he expressed his wish to buy it."

Then he met his victim at certain place in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah to collect the cameras he wished to buy, and claimed that he had transferred the money requested to their bank accounts, Major Al Shamsi added.

"The moment he got the cameras, he disappeared and refused to reply to his victims' repetitive calls, and blatantly offered the same cameras he embezzled for sale online."

The CID section, alerted of the crimes, formed a special search and investigation team to collect the information needed, he pointed out. "Our competent staff investigators managed to identify the identity of the suspect."

Armed with the permission of the public prosecution, the accused has been detained red-handed. "Investigations showed that the suspect has a criminal record, and proved to have been involved in similar fraud and racketeering cybercrimes."

The victims, when confronted with the suspect, affirmed that he was the one behind the fraud, Major Al Shamsi stated. "He took hold of our expensive cameras without paying due money."

The case was then referred to the Ras Al Khaimah Public Prosecution for legal action. "The public is urged to be careful when dealing with unidentified people, particularly online, and report any suspicious practices to the police."
