UAE- Dh40,000 fine against unlicensed egg vendors


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Ras Al Khaimah Municipality has slapped a hefty fine of Dh40,000 against illegal egg vendors who proved to have been unlicensed for such commercial practice.

Staff municipal inspectors of the public health department at the RAK Municipality have seized 130 cartons of eggs, most of which were being sold in improper conditions, according to senior municipal sources.

Munzir bin Shukr Al Zaabi, Director General of the RAK Municipality, said the erring egg vendors have also proved to have stored the seized and later destroyed eggs an unsuitable temperature. "They have stored the eggs in an old house at 23 degrees Celsius."

The wholesalers nabbed have illegally sold eggs to grocery shops, markets, and houses individually and in a vehicle at a number of commercial and residential areas without being permitted, he added.

"This is the third of its type violation to be detected against the same sellers who have carried out their illegal activities under the name of a well-known food company to mislead the inspectors."

The erring dealers had earlier been denied license because of failing to meet the set conditions, he pointed out. "They have been asked to provide a proper place that suits the standard food and health conditions."

A hefty fine of Dh40,000 have been slapped on the erring salespersons for practicing a commercial activity without being licensed and for storing food in improper conditions, Al Zaabi stated. "A fine of Dh20,000 had earlier been imposed on the same vendors for the same violation."

Indicating, he said an Emirati government employee had alerted the civic body about the suspicious activities of the illegal retailers. "The erring vendors, in person or in vehicles, used to sell and store the eggs in violation of law."

Shaimaa Al Tunaiji, Acting Manager of the Public Health Department, said the erring vendors used to store the eggs at a 23 degree Celsius. "This is much higher than the due temperatures which range from 3 to 5 degrees Celsius."

The staff inspectors have seized 130 big carton boxes stuffed with eggs for wholesale, she elaborated. "Fifty of these boxes were found inside the traditional house that was used as a warehouse while 80 others were seized from their vehicle," she said, noting that all the eggs seized were destroyed.
