(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A soldier and his friend, who were high on drugs when they disposed of their friend's body on the road near a hospital, were both cleared of providing him with the fatal heroin overdose.
An Emirati soldier, 18, and a Sudanese resident, 32, have been acquitted by the Court of First Instance of giving drugs (heroin and tramadol and other narcotics pills for free) to an Emirati man who later died. They have been sentenced to one year and four years respectively for taking drugs. The resident will be deported after completing his jail sentence. Dubai police was alerted about the incident on March 6. "At around 3:30 am and while me and my colleague were on a police patrol duty in Al Garhoud area, we learnt from the operations room about a man lying down on the pavement opposite a hospital in the area," a police sergeant said. He added: "We were told by the security guards at the hospital that the first defendant entered the hospital and informed them about the deceased man". The police officers apprehended the first accused behind the hospital and the other outside a nearby supermarket. "The latter would not want at first to ride in the patrol car. He claimed he did not do anything wrong". Both were taken to Al Rashidiyah police station and later referred to the General Directorate of Fighting Narcotics. A police lieutenant said that the report they received was about a man lying down unconsciously, possibly dead because of a drug overdose, near a hospital. "When we reached the scene we learnt he was dead. We were told by hospital staff that two men came and dropped him there". The officer said that he learnt later that the two suspects were caught by on-duty patrol cops. The defendants' urine sample tested positive for tramadol, morphine and other drugs. The verdict remains subject to appeal.
