Dubai policeman charged over attempt to murder salesman

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A policeman stood trial on Sunday after being accused of attempted murder for stabbing two men with a sharp tool outside a nightclub.

The 41-year-old Emirati officer was off-duty when he allegedly stabbed the Jordanian (a 30-year-old salesman) three times in the back, chest and abdomen. The forensic report said the cuts were deep and could have been fatal had the victim had he not been rushed to the hospital.

The policeman is also accused in the Court of First Instance of assaulting together with a partner (a 35-year-old inspector), the Jordanian and his two friends (a Lebanese PRO, 27, and a Syrian marketing manager, 27).

He reportedly punched and stabbed the Syrian in the waist. The three friends were also charged with physical assault. After they all confessed to the charges in court, the presiding Judge Fahd Al Shamsi told them they should try to work it out through an amicable settlement.

It was not clear from the public prosecution records what pushed the men to fight. The Lebanese security manager of the nightclub, aged 39, said that he was on his job at around 3am on February 19 when he witnessed a verbal brawl between the Lebanese defendant and the two Emiratis.

"The security guards broke up the fight and escorted them out. But the same men then got engaged in a physical fight near the hotel entrance".

During the fight, the Jordanian could be heard screaming loud of pain.

"We saw that his intestines were cut out of his body. He was stabbed in the back and chest too," the manager said.

The forensic expert said she spotted three stab wounds on the first victim's body which could have been deadly. A 28-year-old Jordanian man, who witnessed the fight, told the investigators that after the first intervention by the hotel guards, the two Emirati defendants pushed the Lebanese accused and made him fall down. "So his two friends stepped in and got stabbed".

A police officer said they moved to the hotel soon after the incident was reported to Bur Dubai police.

"We found the two stabbing victims were taken to hospital. The defendant and his accomplice, who stabbed and assaulted them, were found to have been under the influence of alcohol".

The hearing has been adjourned to September 25.
