Qatar- Green areas to be rehabilitated

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment has launched projects to rehabilitate green areas by planting more trees and protecting them in the coming years.

Engineer Ahmed Al Sada, Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs at the ministry, said in an interview with the Municipality magazine that there are also plans to rehabilitate Qatari wildlife, including combating desertification and stabilising sand dunes, among others.

'We launched the project in 2014 and have rehabilitated five green areas in Rawdat Al Ghafat, Al Wakra, Simaisma and others. We expect to rehabilitate more areas such as Rawdat Asa Al Rai near Al Shamal Road where trees have been planted.

Trees have also been planted in Rawdat Um Taqah. We plant a new tree for every old one that dies.

'We prepared a new National Strategy for Biodiversity in 2015 to maintain endangered trees and protect them from being overgrazed. We adopted a decision to ban camels from grazing for two years to achieve positives results.

'We are working to implement a project to link all national stations to monitor air quality through a unified electronic system,” he added.

On the impact of construction projects on the environment, he said all projects which get environmental permit have passed the evaluation of their effects on the environment.
