UAE- Cricket: Sharjah women leave for Andhra series

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Top UAE women's cricket squad - Sharjah Cricket Academy (SCA) - will leave on Wednesday for a seven-match 11-day trip to Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, India.

The 11-member side, led by the UAE veteran Charvi Bhatt, will play against the senior Andhra Pradesh team for the T20 Danube Cup from Thursday.

Andhra Cricket Association is the headquarters of the Indian women's national cricket team.

"We have been in training for the past two months under our coach Hyder Kazmi despite the heat here, but I guess the conditions will be almost similar during the summer in Guntur which has a large following for the sport and in women's cricket in India," Charvi told Khaleej Times at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium during a formal announcement of the tour.

"We have experience and youth on our side with 10 of the members being current UAE senior and age group players. The strength mainly lies in our bowling, backed up with a decent fielding and batting lineup. This was proven last season during our Cup winning tours to Bahrain and Oman," the allrounder added.

Vice captain Humaira Tasneem, also a top women's basketball player in the UAE, will join the side in Guntur. Tall Tasneem is one of the many allrounders in the squad with her leg spin and useful batting abilities with the long handle. Leg spinners Humaira and Charvi, are capable of unnerving good batting lineups, and the duo could cause some worry to the Andhra Pradesh lineup.

To supplement their efforts will be the medium pace attack comprising Namita D'Souza and Shivani Sathe. These bowlers is expected to get good backup from Dharini Ravi, an offspinner, and the slow left arm stuff of Heena Hotchandani.

The batting will mainly depend on opener Chaya Mugal, Natasha Michael, wicketkeeper and opening batswoman Eza Oza, veteran Subha Venkat, and Neha Sharma who used to play college cricket in Delhi. Neha had to wait for three years here to be eligible to play representative cricket in the UAE.

Present at the announcement and the presentation of the Cup and the team colours were the representatives of the sponsors - MMA group of Companies, Danuba, Petromann events, Roystion House of Uniforms By S. Kumar, ISports, Ajnish Sports and Aeon & Trisl Reasl Estate.

"SCA came back from with trophies from Bahrain and Oman and now if they do it this time, there could be an English trip waiting for them as a present," said Irfan Ansari, manager, SCA.
