UN body thanks Sharjah charity's big heart

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Big Heart Foundation announced it will continue its support for Syrian refugees in Jordan, particularly those in Zaatari refugee camp.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has extended its sincere appreciation to the Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), under the patronage of Her Highness Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, and UNHCR Eminent Advocate, for its indispensable support to Syrian refugees.

The Big Heart Foundation announced it will continue its support for Syrian refugees in Jordan, particularly those in Zaatari refugee camp. In early 2016, TBHF announced donations worth Dh3 million in support of the Zaatari refugees, towards a 24/7 medical clinic in the camp. The clinic provides healthcare services including primary health, mental and reproductive treatment, as well as medical rehabilitation services, nutrition and management of chronic non-communicable diseases, and secondary and tertiary referral services.

TBHF's commitment towards the health and wellbeing of refugees in Zaatari also included a Dh500,000 donation for sanitation tools, to combat any disease spread, and to ensure hygienic standards for the 80,000 Syrian refugees living in the camp.

Mariam Al Hammadi, Director of 'Salam Ya Seghar,' an initiative by TBHF said: "The launch of this activity was conceived from a recognition of the importance of maintaining the health and safety of the refugee families, who we believe should have the same fundamental human rights as families who are fortunate enough to live normal lives."

Al Hammadi added: "The inability to take care of personal hygiene can increase the chances of disease. This is why TBHF has sponsored this initiative in collaboration with UNHCR, whereby we provide money and vouchers for Syrian refugees for them to purchase basic health and hygiene products".

Royal generosity in action

Shaikha Jawaher's contributions have spanned across the Middle East and North Africa, assisting thousands of families.

Her generous contribution was not only limited to refugees in Jordan, but has also reached Syrian Refugees in Egypt, where TBHF provided Dh5.5 million as cash assistance for hundreds of the most vulnerable refugee families.

Lauding TBHF's unwavering support for Syrian refugees, Toby Harward, head of Office in UNHCR Abu Dhabi, said "We are confident this donation will have a positive impact on the lives of refugees, as we have seen time and time again through Her Highness Shaikha Jawaher's philanthropy and through the Big Heart Foundation."

TBHF has helped address the needs of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, inlcuding the provision of emergency health care services for over 356,000 Syrian refugees, and food and cash assistance for over 400,000 refugees, besides basic relief items such as clothing, blankets and shelter during winter for displaced Syrian refugees in Jordan, Iraq, Turkey and Lebanon.
