Dubai is constantly in the doghouse for not being a bookish enough place. And the accusations have a ring of truth to them given that there's less than a handful of half decent bookshops in Dubai. Okay, so we love House of Prose (in Jumeirah)and Bookworm (in Satwa), charming places both. Kinokuniya, too, in The Dubai Mall, despite its imposing industrial space; how can anyone not love it? Especially when that much space means you find the most obscure titles in their aisles. But fancy, large chains apart, it's such a treat to randomly stumble upon little nooks peddling second hand titles. You never know what you'll find! For the last year at Times Square Center on Shaikh Zayed Road has allowed a teeny space called Book Hero, a second hand book shop to prosper. Book Hero through their sterilisation supports stray and abandoned animals in the community. You find second hand books (as chep as Dh10), and DVDs, and once you set foot on the little space, with it's colourful rugs, and IKEA-type bookcases exhibiting their wares, you're stuck there for the better part of an hour looking past titles you have no time for - Learn knitting in 30 days, anyone? - and getting on your knees to find the titles on the bottom shelf, tucked away at the back. Last weekend, on a trip to Sharaf DG, we swung by and stocked up on reading for the rest of the year. You can't miss it. On the ground floor of Times Square Center, veer right as you enter.
