Making India shine in the UAE


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The UAE, the land of opportunities and a second home for many Indians, embraces every culture with a open heart. And Indian culture is one of them. Indians, in this country, have made a mark for themselves and are also keeping their culture and tradition alive through their work and achievements. On the occasion of the 70th Indian Independence Day today, KT speaks to few Indians shining in the UAE.

Women achievers

When a young medical graduate shifted to the UAE from India in 1964, she had a dream to serve people and offer them affordable medical facilities. Her hard work and determination soon made her a household name here. After years of dedicated service, Zulekha Hospital was established in Sharjah in 1992. And Dr. Zulekha Daud (Chairperson, Zulekha Hospital) was placed in Forbes Middle East top 100 Indian leaders in the UAE for her great work and contribution in the Arab region.

Zanubia Shams, her daughter and co-chairperson of the hospital said: "Just as much as the UAE plays home to multiple nationalities, the diverse population from within India itself adds to the beauty in diversity of this country with our variety of food, culture and lifestyle. Proud to say, India is home to some of the best doctors, engineers, entertainment personalities and political leaders. The UAE-India bond is only getting stronger by the day and this has been possible with the welcoming support from the government and local residents.

Nishi Singh, a famous Indian Kathak dancer and Country Committee Chairperson for Art and Culture in the UAE was trained under renowned gurus late Pandit Durga Lal, Urmila Nagar, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Kathak queen Sitara Devi and Rajendra Gangani. She moved to Dubai three years ago with her family and within a short duration established herself as a well-known choreographer. She has performed for more than 50 shows in the UAE.

Talent unlimited

Indian students are glorifying their country in the UAE with their extraordinary talent and achievements. They are not only surprising everyone with their talent but also making their country proud with their breathtaking performances.

Humaid Habeeb, a Grade 12 student wants to pursue career in medicine. He has won many awards including the Sharjah Sustainability Award (2013) and Sharjah Environment Awareness Award (2014). He is the founder and Chairperson of Green Globe, an environmental and humanitarian youth organisation.

He said: "We have organised more than 50 events including tree plantations, clean ups, anti-smoking awareness campaigns at labour camps and have also worked with Dubai Municipality, Dewa and Dubai Cares. Every year we go to India to conduct environment related awareness. As a responsible citizen I would like to serve my motherland."

Suchetha Satish is a Grade 6 student at The Indian High School. She can sing in 18 languages including French, Arabic, Nepali, Japanese and Indian regional languages. She has been learning to sing since she was six years old and her inspiration in singing is none other than Bollywood's leading plackback singer Shreya Ghoshal.

Neha Rathi and Aditya Rathi were the first siblings to win the Shaikh Hamdan Award for distinguished academic performance in 2012. They have also won the Sharjah award for excellence in education in 2013 (Neha) and 2014 (Aditya). They have also won around 150 medals (gold, silver and bronze) together for swimming in the last three years. Originally from Uttar Pradesh (state of India) Neha aspires to become a business woman in future.
