UAE- Cop on trial for helping detainee escape for Dh5,000 bribe

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A policeman stood trial on Sunday, charged with helping a detainee escape the port detention centre after he was allegedly paid Dh5,000.

The Court of First Instance was told the 27-year-old policeman (a Comoros Islands passport holder) solicited and collected Dh5,000 in bribe from the Emirati businessman, aged 35, who was detained on forgery and fraud charges.

The sum was allegedly deposited in his bank account by an unknown woman.

The escape took place on October 14, last year, when the officer allegedly abused his post as he was in the control room at the detention. He opened the backside gate (usually used for entry and exit of the detainees) leading to the parking lot where he had parked his car for the businessman to take in his getaway.

The policeman has been charged with soliciting and collecting a bribe and helping a detainee escape detention. The businessman was charged with offering a bribe and escape detention.

A police lieutenant quoted the policeman on trial as admitting that he helped the detainee escape.

"He never parked his car in the internal car park but he did on October 14, when the businessman ran away at 5am. The latter drove the policeman's car which indicated that the two had pre-arranged for it."

The lieutenant added that the businessman managed to exit the main gate of the detention centre as he was driving the cop's tinted car which was known to the guards.

The officer added that the policeman confessed that the businessman had promised to help him secure a better job in Abu Dhabi.

The CCTV camera covering the detention control room and the corridor leading to the exit was sent to the General Directorate of Criminal Evidence, the lieutenant told the prosecutor.

The businessman was arrested at 7am on October 24 in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, with the help of an informant's tip-off. The cop's car keys were found with the businessman.

The cop on trial was arrested on the same day of the escape. His medical evaluation showed he was mentally sane and aware of his actions at the time of the incident.

The court adjourned the hearing to August 30.
