Kuwait- French, Russian FMs discuss regional issues


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Aug 11 (KUNA) -- French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and his Russian counterpart Sergey V. Lavrov discussed by phone the situations in Ukraine and Syria on Thursday night.

The conversation dealt with the need for Russia and Ukraine to reach a negotiated settlement and avoid escalating the tensions in the Crimea Peninsula, according to a statement by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development.

The two ministers reviewed the implementation of the Minsk Protocol to halt the war in the Donbass region of Ukraine which was signed by of Ukraine, the Russian Federation, the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR) on September 5, 2014.

They exchanged views on the role of France and Germany in the implementation of the agreement.

Regarding Syria, the two sides stressed the need of reaching an immediate agreement on cessation of hostilities and resuming the intra-Syrian dialogue on political transition.

The talks also dealt with the tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the border region of Nagorno-Karabakh, the statement added. (end) mmb.gb
