Oman- Workshop to discuss potential of halal food sector in region

The halal food sector is becoming a major source of growth in both the Islamic and wider global economy.

Aimed at raising awareness about the potential of this sector in the region, Omanexpo will organise the first-ever halal workshop in conjunction with the Food and Hospitality Oman Exhibition at the Oman International Exhibition Centre on September 21, a press release stated.

According to the State of Global Islamic Economy 2015-16 report, the global Muslim spending on food and beverage increased by 4.3 per cent in 2014, taking the potential core halal food market to 16.7 per cent of global expenditure.

Ammar Ahmad, project manager of Halal Awareness Workshop, said, 'With the increasing global awareness about halal and its growing potential, the sector plays a key role in the country's economic growth. We are proud to bring in some renowned experts who will discuss the growth potential of this market, and the challenges, issues and opportunities facing the sector in Oman and across the region. The workshop provides a good platform to learn more about halal audit and certification, its importance, trainings and benefits; marketing of halal products and key opportunities in the halal food market.'

Moderators of the day-long workshop include, Asad Sajjad, chief executive officer at Gulf Halal Centre, International Halal Centre, Halal Development Council and HDCMICE Middle East with Mufti Zeeshan Abdul Aziz, chairman at Shariah Board, Gulf Halal Centre along with other experts who will facilitate the workshop.

Sajjad has been working as a halal agenda promoter since 2008. He has spoken extensively about the benefits of halal certified exports and opening the doors to the trillion-dollar global halal market. Aziz has conducted around 250 halal certification audits of different food, beverage, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the Far East.

The workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to interact with halal food players, discuss the importance of halal certification and tackle issues pertaining to food safety, healthcare and sustainability.

Participants will learn about the basic concepts of halal and requirements, the importance of proper sourcing of raw materials and the global halal market. The workshop is open to all food and beverage operators, food ingredients and raw material suppliers, food preparation and service establishments, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical companies, hospitality and tourism companies, herbal and cosmetics suppliers, among others.
