Beware of games like Pokemon Go: Police

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Abu Dhabi Police have warned of wrong and negative uses of electronic games and programmes on its young users, after Pokemon Go gained much popularity among gamers.

The warning came as the game compiles information and data taken by the user's smart phone camera and sends them to targets, which may pose a danger to the place that surrounds the gamer.

The police in its warning said the game - Pokemon Go - which derivates from the phrase pocket Monester, works on switching on the Global Positioning System or GPS service on the smart phone. It then sends coordinates and information about the places the user is at. Major-General Omeir Al Muheiri, Director-General of the Police Operations of Abu Dhabi police, stressed that the game gathers information and data about the gamer accurately, which includes his location and the internet provider address (IP). The game, he said, can get into the user's e-mail, its inbox and sent mails, and the websites the gamer has visited before. All this happens even before the gamer starts playing the game on his smart phone.

Al Muheiri said e-crime experts have highlighted that the gamer, in good faith and enthusiasm, follows the game's instructions which could result in him encroaching and trespassing houses and other private places.

"While the gamer gets busy upgrading to higher levels and continues aiming his phone camera to the areas around him/her, which may include some critical facilities and establishments, the GPS specifies the location of the gamer, which might be a critical and important place, and sends the coordinates and other user's data to distrusted servers around the world," Al Muheiri pointed out.

"The game poses a risk to the user and makes him a tool to share the coordinates of the places he moves around. In addition, the user may endanger his life and that of other road users if he plays the game while driving,"

The game may distract user's attention and cause fatal accidents, especially when young users get busy following the virtual Pokemon on ground and in realty, he added.
