(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) As many as 6,471 CCTV cameras have been installed in 900 buildings as part of the mandatory surveillance system introduced in the emirate.

The Himaya or Protection system has been launched by His Highness Shaikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, to enhance safety, security, and stability in the emirate.

Brigadier Abdullah Khamis Al Hadidi, Acting Chief Commandant of the RAK Police, on Monday said 900 buildings have observed the law No. 3/2015 under the supervision of the RAK Police and the General Resources Authority.

"These entities include a number of centres, shops, establishments, government departments, mosques, hospitals, schools, hotels, rest houses, jewelry shops, villas, as well as residential towers and buildings."

The 6,471 CCTV cameras installed include 4,160 internal cameras, and 2,311 external cameras, Al Hadidi said.

Maj-Gen Hadidi said the move is in line with a global scheme that depends on advanced technological systems to enhance security.

Brigadier Jamal Ahmed Al Tair, Chairman of the General Resources Authority, RAK, said: "We are planning to install 1,700 cameras every month, adding that the protection system will cover the entire emirate.

The General Resources Authority has accredited 53 service providers for the job following nine intensive courses.

"We have also trained 191 engineers and technicians at the American University in RAK so that they can sell and install the CCTV cameras."

More courses will be introduced to train new batch of service providers, engineers and technicians who can do the installation of cameras.

"The General Resources Authority, in collaboration with the Licensure Section of the RAK Police, will launch regular inspection campaigns to ensure their compliance with the new system."
