The latest version of a popular Arabic adventure TV show, Eish Safari, is being filmed in Salalah and is scheduled to be broadcast in September on MBC 3.

The filming of the show began on July 25 and will continue through August. From September, Eish Safari (Live the Safari) will be broadcast once a week for a year at 7pm Oman time (Saudi time 6pm).

The programme will see 12 children from different Arab countries split in two teams competing in a series of physical and mental challenges. Ashraf Younis, channel manager, MBC 3 said the show is meant to instil ideas of self-reliance and cooperation in participants. 'It gives 12 Arab children the opportunity to spend 30 days together far away from home,' he said by e-mail.

'They endure the hardships of nature and learn to rely on themselves without family and friends.' Younis said Salalah's geography and khareef season made it an ideal place for the shooting of the programme. 'Salalah offers the right elements for this type of a show that requires: Water, sand, forests and mountains besides the mysterious weather,' he said. Younis said Oman was also a very supportive place to film.

'Oman has much to offer from a natural settings' perspective for this type of programme, including breathtaking scenery, nature, and most importantly the hospitality of Omanis and support of governmental entities.' Participants also gain appreciation for the country through their experience, he said.

'They were exposed to different animal sanctuaries, villages and cultural sites,' he said, adding, 'Our goal is to make sure that each candidate goes home with memories of a great adventurous experience while learning about the culture and heritage of a new country.' Only a few children were selected to participate of the thousands who applied, said Younis. First broadcast in 2005, the show was previously shot in South Africa, Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, the US, Turkey, Abu Dhabi, Jordan and Morocco.
