Kuwait- UN envoy tries anew to break stalemate in Yemeni talks

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, Aug 5 (KUNA) -- UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on Friday held a meeting with delegations of the Yemeni opposition movements, Anasrullah and the People's Congress Party, as part of the Kuwait-hosted consultations aimed at settling the crisis in the troubled country.

The envoy, due to hold a similar round of talks with a delegation representing the legitimate government later today, is basically discussing with the Yemeni parties ideas related to his proposal for resolving the Yemeni crisis, noting that they should remain committed to the peace process.

Cheikh Ahmed is also scheduled to hold, tonight, meetings with ambassadors of 18 States concerned with the peace settlement for Yemen. He would brief them about latest developments taking place within the diplomatic process framework.

He will hold a final session, with attendance of all parties, on Saturday, where he would re-emphasize necessity of resuming the consultations and will organize a news conference to brief the public about results of the conciliation efforts.

Cheikh Ahmed informed the UN Security Council, via remote-distance networks, that the opposition forces rebuffed the UN draft accord and urged the member States to intervene to break the dilemma in the process. In response, the Council issued a statement urging the two groups to cooperate with the international trouble-shooter.

His blueprint envisages fighters' withdrawal from cities, guns' handover, reinstating State institutions and forming a conciliation government.

Kuwait, which has hosted these consultations since April 21st, had warned the parties that they must reach a consensus within days and the process was extended till August 7th. (end) am.rk
