H E Ugur Dogan, Turkey's Ambassador to Oman, has claimed that the recent 'attempted coup' in Turkey was 'an act by terrorists wearing military fatigues'. He was speaking at a press conference on Tuesday to explain the turn of events that he said was too often distorted by international media. 'This was not a coup. These people were terrorists in military uniforms,' he said.

'It was the Turkish nation who thwarted the plot. They stood bravely in front of the tanks and reclaimed their democratic rights.' The Turkish government has blamed the exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen, and his Gulen movement, of orchestrating the coup.

Thousands of people from the army, civil service, judiciary, academics and media have been arrested or dismissed from their jobs since the events as the government seeks to 'cleanse' the country of Gulen associates. A three-month state of emergency was declared in July to expedite the legal process against the accused.

'This movement has been growing up within the Turkish state structure. So, this is the reason why other sectors, other institutions are being cleansed of these elements.' H E Dogan also said that the Turkish government was upset with the way the events have been covered in the media.

'Some international news agencies unfortunately failed and are still failing,' he claimed adding that they have misreported the events. H E Dogan said media should be more sensitive to the seriousness of the threat Turkey faced.

'Some of them try to distort the picture, focusing not on the gravity of the coup attempt itself and what could have happened if it had succeeded,' he said. 'We would have had complete chaos in Turkey, complete disorder, may be even civil war, which of course would affect the neighbouring region.'
