Aspetar to back Qatar Olympic delegation at Rio 2016

Doha: Aspetar, the orthopaedic sports medicine hospital in Qatar, continues its pivotal role in supporting Qatar";s sporting delegations to international competitions, extending support to Qatar";s team at Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, from Friday until August 26.

Dr. Juan-Manuel Alonso, Acting Chief of Sports Medicine, Aspetar, and Chief Medical Officer of the delegation, will head a team of six practitioners from Aspetar to provide support to the athletes competing in a range of disciplines.

Dr. Muhammad Ghaith Al Kuwari, Acting Director General, Aspetar, said: 'Aspetar is always keen to support Qatar";s sports teams and delegations. We are pleased to offer our services to Qatar";s Olympic stars travelling to Rio this summer in order to help them reach their maximum performance during the games. The hospital is committed to fulfil this remarkable role by utilizing its medical and practical experience to serve the participating teams, provide athletes with the world";s best experts in sports medicine, and support Qatar";s delegation to the 2016 Olympic Games.”

Aspetar has been an important part of Qatar";s Olympic Games preparations and has been providing medical support to Qatar";s travelling athletes for months in the build up to the competition in Brazil. The hospital has provided numerous services to Qatar";s largest ever Olympic delegation including treating and training over 60 athletes, coaches, administrators and medical staff.

Dr. Alonso said: 'Our main role in Rio will be to monitor the health of the athletes and help maximise their performances on the field. It";s extremely important for all of Qatar";s travelling athletes to stay healthy during the period of the games and we";ll be on hand to ensure they do. Our experts will provide injury diagnosis, rehabilitation, as well as medical consultancy and advice concerning nutrition, recovery, how to overcome jetlag, and how to protect athletes from communicable, respiratory and virus infections during this time of the year.”

During the past months, Aspetar provided medical screening services necessary to obtain athletes"; permission to participate in the games, and administered frequent traveller vaccinations to a number of athletes and officials in collaboration with the country";s Ministry of Health. The hospital is currently overseeing the process of shipping all necessary medical supplies such as antibiotics, analgesics, dressings and other consumables to provide proper medical care to athletes.

Qatar";s Olympic team has also benefited from additional services and facilities at the world leading hospital, including access to advanced altitude-inducing normobaric hypoxic (oxygen-reduced) rooms at Aspetar that allow athletes to live and train at atmospheres similar to the location of the competition.

Aspetar";s experts have a wealth experience having accompanied Qatar";s Olympic delegation to 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. The hospital also appointed medical delegations to accompany the Algerian national football team at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup competitions in South African and Brazil respectively, as well working with the Cote d";Ivoire (Ivory Coast) national football team at the 2014 Brazil World Cup.
