Former Oman Athletics Association (OAA) chairman Hamad al Jabri announced his candidacy for the post of the OAA chairmanship on Saturday, spelling out a mission to uplift the sport in the sultanate.

The elections for the new OAA board are expected to be held in the last week of September. Speaking to Muscat Daily on Saturday, Jabri, who was the OAA chief from 2008-2012, said, 'I am passionate about athletics and I had a successful stint with my team. Hopefully, the clubs will trust me and support me [again] so that we can take the sport to greater heights.'

Jabri had unsuccessfully contested for the chairmanship at the last elections where he lost to Sheikh Saif al Hosni, the incumbent OAA supremo. A former chairman of the Oman Olympic Committee's (OOC) planning and follow-up committee, Jabri said, 'During my years as the OAA chairman, I learned a lot about the sport and helped it grow at the club and international levels.

"The success of Omani athletes and the qualification of Barakat al Harthi and Ahmed al Marjaby for the 2012 London Olympics during my tenure has given me the confidence that if I am given a chance again to serve the OAA, I could help athletes achieve more laurels for the country.'

According to sources, Al Ittifaq club chairman Abdullah al Harthy and Samail club chief Younis al Siyabi, who is also a member of the Majlis A'shura, have also decided to contest for the OAA chairmanship.

The present OAA chief, Hosni, is unlikely to contest again due to his professional commitments. Jabri is said to be returning to the elections with his core group that helped him manage the OAA successfully during his tenure.

Fauzi al Kiyumi, former OAA general secretary, Mohammed al Asmi, current OAA board member, and Khalfan al Jufaili, former OAA treasurer, are part of his group that will contest the elections for various posts.

Kiyumi is set to contest for the post of the vice-chairmanship against Rashid al Kindi, a former coach and an athlete, who has already announced his intention to run for vice-chairmanship. Kindi is presently Oman Sail's manager of national youth teams and chairman of the Oman Sailing Committee.
