Jordan condemns Israeli settlement plans in Palestinian territories

Amman, 29th July, 2016 (WAM) -- Jordan on Friday reiterated its rejection and condemnation of recent Israeli measures to build more settlements in the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.

Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications and Government Spokesman Mohammed Al Momani was quoted by Jordan News Agency, Petra, as saying:''The Jordanian government condemns in the strongest possible terms and rejects all recent measures taken by the Israeli government in this regard.'' Such provocative measures, the minister said, are a slap for all efforts to breathe life in the peace process and return to the negotiation table. They are also a clear breach of the international law and international humanitarian law, and a flagrant violation of the rights of Palestinian people.

The Israeli actions, which include more demolition of Palestinian houses, displacement of Palestinian families and the legalization of settlement posts, would only add to regional turmoil and feed extremism and violence.

Such measures, the minister added, cast doubts on Israel's approach towards the peace process and the internationally-backed two-state solution.

Israel has recently approved plans to build 770 new settlement units northwest of Bethlehem, 323 units in East Jerusalem, as well as hundreds others, which were announced few weeks earlier.
