Dubai airport staff steals colleague's shopping

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) An airport customer service team leader - accused of stealing Dh607 worth of purchases made by his colleague - was given a suspended six-month jail term on Thursday.

The 39-year-old Egyptian had been supervising the departure and boarding of travellers when he allegedly misappropriated a bag of purchases that a Chinese airline's cabin crew member had left on a counter, the Court of First Instance heard.

The defendant earlier pleaded not guilty to a theft charge in court.

The incident was caught on surveillance cameras at Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport. A policeman said the Chinese complainant, 29, reported the theft at 1:40am on April 9. "He said he bought a silver necklace and a pen from the Duty Free. He left the shopping bag on the service counter at the departure gate. When he returned after the flight take-off, it was missing."

The police added that the defendant was caught on CCTV cameras coming back to the gate before the take-off, and checking what was inside the bag. "He took the items out and put them in his bag. He also kept the receipt."

The officer then confronted the man. "The accused was tensed and kept silent at first. But shortly after, he admitted to the theft. He claimed his wife was sick at hospital in his home country, and he wanted to gift her the stuff he took."

The officer was also surprised about the defendant committing the theft. "He has worked in the airport for more than 10 years. He must have known that no employee or worker can exit the airport without being inspected."
