The International Tent Pegging Federation (ITPF) has honoured Oman with the Medal ofHonour 2016 for the country's strong support to promote the game not only in the sultanate, but across the Gulf region.

The medal was recently presented to H E Sheikh Saad al Saadi, the Minister of Sports Affairs, by ITPF president Mohammed Issa al Fairuz at the minister's office.

The ITPF is based in Muscat, while Fairuz, an Omani, is a former chairman of the Oman Equestrian Federation.

Fairuz said, 'Oman's sports ministry has been one of the strongest supporters of the game. Thanks to its backing, we have the headquarters of the world body in Oman. Also, Muscat hosted the inaugural edition of the World Tent Pegging Championships in 2014. The support has been commendable and it has helped the game grow at a good pace.'

The ITPF chairman said that the executive board has also decided to felicitate Princess Haya bint Hussein, former president of the world equestrian body, the FEI, and Hesham Hatab, the president of the Egyptian Olympic Committee, with the Medal of Honour 2016.

Egypt had successfully hosted the second edition of the worlds in April earlier this year.

Fairuz said the world body has made efforts to promote the game and the initiatives have borne fruit with 30 countries already becoming members of the ITPF since its formation in October 2013.

'The ITPF was launched in Muscat with a membership of 19 countries, and in a span of less than three years, we added 11 more nations. Oman's support has been crucial in our endeavours and the ITPF hopes to have a long and fruitful relationship with the sultanate,' said Fairuz.
