(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) The Illicit Gains Authority referred on Tuesday former minister of tourism Zoheir Garana to criminal court for abusing his power to obtain illicit profits. His wife, son, and daughter are also facing similar accusations, state-run media reported.
Garana, among other Mubarak-era officials, is part of a list of officials accused of corruption following the 25 January Revolution. Garana was first sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement in an embezzlement case related to selling land in Hurghada to Hussain Al-Sajwani, the chairperson of major developer DAMAC.
In a re-trial that concluded in 2014, he was sentenced once more to five years in prison.
In 2013, Garana and former minister of housing Ahmed Al-Maghrabi were released from prison after the court acquitted them of all charges in a similar embezzlement case. However, the prosecution appealed against the court ruling in 2015, and the Cassation Court ordered their re-trial.
