French police arrest more people in Nice attack investigation

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, July 26 (KUNA) -- French anti-terrorist police have arrested two more individuals as part of their investigation into the Nice attack July 14 that killed 84 people and wounded over 300, judicial and media sources said on Tuesday.

So far, five people - three Tunisians or Franco-Tunisians and two Albanians - have been charged for their role in the attack, which was carried out by 31-year-old Tunisian truck driver, Mohammad Lahoij Bouhlal, who was shot dead during his rampage over pedestrians on the Nice beachfront.

The five in custody have been charged with murder, attempted murder in association with a terrorist enterprise, weapons charges and plotting murder.

So-called Islamic State claimed the Nice attack and said the perpetrator was "a soldier" of that terrorist organisation. Interior Ministry sources say that France has not "fully established" the link between the Tunisian killer and IS.

The two men arrested on Tuesday were being held pending investigation of any links with Lahoij Bouhlal and tracking of support that might have been given to him in preparing his terrible crime.

"France Info" radio said that police had located a picture of one of those just detained as he posed in the truck with the Tunisian perpetrator some time before he carried out his deadly rampage on Promenade des Anglais, one of the most frequented tourist sites in Nice.

Initially, investigators had believed that Lahoij Bouhlal had acted alone and was suffering from serious mental disorder, but as they delve into evidence they have discovered the attack was "premeditated" planned well in advance and there was a plot to support the deadly operation. (End).
