As many as 105 cases of industrial fires were reported from across the country in the last three years, a Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) official has said.

'Thirty-five cases were reported in 2015, 36 in 2014 and 34 in 2013,' a PACDA official said, adding that, 'Most of them were reported during summer months.'

Citing the causes, he said, 'In most cases, safety guidelines were not followed. While, some used mobile units like caravans without adequate safety measures, some stored hazardous materials in places where they were not meant to be.

'Failure to conduct periodical maintenance of equipment like alarm systems and fire extinguishers and faulty electrical connections also caused fires.'

Following safety guidelines is the best way to avoid such incidents, he said. 'Owners must follow fire safety guidelines and ensure periodic maintenance of equipment.

'Highly flammable materials should be stored in suitable places and workers should be provided training on how to extinguish small fires.

'Appointing a supervisor for security and safety is also recommended,' he added.
