Day of reckoning for Malawi Famed Lawyer, Politician Raphael Kasambara


(MENAFN- The Maravi Post) After the Judge passes his ruling today, Raphael Kasambara will walk out a FREE man or convict heading to jail for a long time.

Raphael Kasambara is a Malawian activist, lawyer, teacher, and politician and now accused of attempted murder and standing to be convicted or acquitted of all charges in a few hours from now.

He served as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General from April 2012 until he was accused of attempted murder of one Paul Mphwiyo. The scandal that exposed cashgate

. He also served as the former Attorney General under the administration of Bingu wa Mutharika during the early part of the administration. After which he became the legal representative of the then Malawian vice-president, Joyce Banda who later assumed the Presidency after Bingu WA Mutharika suffered a heart attack.

Kasambara had been a critic of the administration of Bingu wa Mutharika, being vocal about grounds for impeachment and commenting that "wants to be a dictator". He was jailed in February 2012, after thugs went to his office with petrol bombs in an attempted arson plot, he called the police, together with supporters and restrained the perpetrators

Instead he was arrested for kidnapping and torture of the thugs. He was later released on bail, and then arrested again over the faulty bail procedures. Amnesty International had expressed concern over his case.

But this morning he faces a tougher challenge. Paul Mphwiyo was shot on the night of 13 September 2013 when he was entering his area 43 home in the capital, Lilongwe.

On 8 November, the same year, Malawi's former Justice Minister, Raphael Kasambara, was arrested for allegedly masterminding the shooting of Mphwiyo.

The case which started end 2013 is now but over where the accused persons Pika Manondo, Macdonald Kumwembe and Kasambara, are expected to face judgement in a few hours.
