Zakat Fund spends QR100m in first six months

DOHA: Zakat Fund run by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affaris has spent more than 22.4m on several social causes inside the country last month, totaling over QR100m during first haft of this year.

The highest spending was recorded in February at over QR34.4m, followed by June QR22.4m and May contributed QR17.8m. The expenses of April and March witnessed slight difference at QR9.6m and QR9.6m respectively. The lowest amount was accounted in January at QR8.5m.

The spending in the last month include permanent monthly financial support provided by Zakat Fund to the needy families (Qatari and expatriates) , Qatar News Agency reported yesterday. Zakat Fund also helped people (families and individuals) to solve the financial problems they faced temporarily. And it was given one time.

To avail the service, the poor and needy people can submit their requests to the headquarters of Zakat Fund. The request form could be downloaded from the website of Zakat Fund at http://www.zakat.gov.qa/Contents/misTopics/zakat/application.pdf.

The request form asks personal information of applicant. The social research section at Zakat Fund received 439 requests for financial support in April, 2016. Some 153 cases were studied and 51 field survey were conducted to the accommodations of the applicants to check the credibility of the requests, said a report posted on the website of Zakat Fund. Zakat is a form of alms-giving and religious tax in Islam, which, by Quranic ranking, immediately follows prayer (salat) in importance. As one of the Five Pillars of Islam, zakat is a religious obligation for all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria of wealth. Zakat is based on income and the value of all of one";s possessions. It is customarily 2.5 percent of a Muslim";s total savings and wealth above a minimum amount known as nisab.
