HRH Prince Moulay Rachid Chairs in Tangier MedCop Opening Ceremony

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) HRH Prince Moulay Rachid on Monday chaired the opening ceremony of the second Conference of Parties of the countries bordering the Mediterranean on Climate Change (MedCOP Climate 2016), which is taking place in Tangier under the patronage of HM King Mohammed VI.

The opening ceremony was marked by the royal message to the participants, which was read out by President of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council, Ilyas El Omari.

In this message, the Sovereign stressed that the Mediterranean is probably going to be one of the regions most impacted by global warming in the world. It will affect natural resources as well as major sectors of economic activity, such as agriculture, the fisheries, tourism, industry, energy production, etc.

However, this unique multicultural area of convergence, exchange and interaction has the potential to become a source of strength based on solidarity, to rise to the climate change challenge and collectively build the resilience needed, HM the King said.

A region affected by most of the climate change impacts, the Mediterranean is in a position to turn the necessary mitigation and adaptation measures into levers for the achievement of inclusive, successful sustainable development, the Sovereign noted, adding that this region will thus receive international recognition thanks to its joint actions.

Upon his arrival, HRH Prince Moulay Rachid reviewed a detachment of Auxiliary Force, which made the honors before being greeted notably by Interior Minister, Mohamed Hassad, Minister of Radiological Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Paraguay, Cesar Jose Cardozo Roman, and Minister Delegate in charge of Environment, Hakima El Haite.

On this occasion, HRH Prince Moulay Rachid visited "the Medina of solutions" space, one of the main events of this conference, which highlights the potential of circular economy in terms of adaptation to climate change, through creative and innovative solutions to promote sustainability.

"The Medina of solutions" is bringing together numerous exhibitors who are active in addressing climate change. This space will host several meetings between different civil society actors.

MEDCOP brings together more than 2,000 participants active in regional climate change issues, including representatives from cities and regions, private sector companies, civil society organizations, research/training centers, policymakers and elected officials from the Mediterranean Region.

The conference seeks to define the Mediterranean as a climate change hub and engage stakeholders in a discussion on regional climate change issues in order to catalyze coordination and momentum ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be hosted in Marrakech, November 7-18.

The goal of the MEDCOP is to prepare a roadmap of regional actions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change, by bringing together coalitions of stakeholders.
