SQU organises blood donation campaign at Muscat Grand Mall

The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), represented by the Blood Donation Committee and the 'Art Colours Group' from the College of Education, recently organised a blood donation campaign at Muscat Grand Mall.

This campaign came to conclude the blood donation drives that were conducted during the holy month of Ramadan to cover the needs of patients at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital and to disseminate the culture of blood donation in the society.

The campaign was marked with the participation of 'Art Colours Group' from the College of Education, with a corner of live painting that highlighted the talents of the students in expressing the means of giving and spreading the culture of voluntary blood donation throughout the year. In addition, the students supervised a corner of face painting for kids. The campaign also included a donor recruitment and educational corner that aimed at raising the awareness of blood donation.

The 'Oman Blood Donors' volunteer group participated in the event and had a major contribution in educating the public about the importance of blood donation, its benefits and conditions and helped in directing the donors to donate blood.

Dr Arwa al Riyami, chairperson of the Blood Donation Committee appealed for the response of the public and the contribution of the students and the Oman Blood Donors group.

She highlighted the role of the youth and volunteer groups in community service and in supporting blood donation activities. She also thanked the management of Muscat Grand Mall for hosting and supporting the event and highlighted the importance of such initiatives in supporting the blood banks in the country.

Dr Riyami said, 'The need for blood at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital continues throughout the year and increases during the period of vacations and holidays. Therefore, the campaign came to coincide with the preparations for Eid al Fitr holidays.'

She added that blood donation is a noble initiative that contributes in saving many lives daily around the world and that the awareness corner of the campaign aimed at educating the public through newly prepared Arabic and English leaflets on blood and platelet donation.

The visitors of the campaign admired the students' talents and blood donors expressed their happiness to participate in the blood drive.
